And the Winners Are . . . !!!

Friday was a final day of battle in our War Lords of Japan simulation and it did not disappoint. After two weeks of studying background notes, quizzes, and completing tasks, three teams were able to become shoguns of their class as a result of strategy and some good luck. In Blue Block, the Hokkaido team was able to conquer all but one group to take control of the board. In the Red Block, again the Hokkaido team took first by conquering all the other teams. Finally in Green block, Nagasaki took command as shogun by conquering all but one team. We really had fun and I think students also learned a lot in the process. Monday we will have a brief quiz as follow up to show the kids how much they learned. They began the simulation with the same quiz, but did miserably on it because the really did not know anything at all about Japanese history.  On Monday, most students will be pleasantly surprised because they will do very well. I have been doing the War Lords simulation for probably a good ten years now, and it never fails. Students love it and finish the final quiz usually with good scores.

The next two to three weeks we will finish up our unit about Japan. It is hard to believe that it was about one month ago that the earthquake and tsunami occurred there. It was a stunning way to begin our unit and totally by coincidence. This next week I will introduce to the children their culminating project for China and Japan, creating a commercial to advertise either an ancient service or product for one of these cultures. It is a challenging assignment but very fun to do. (It will only be required of students who stay the second half.)
Finally, in case you are not aware, all Hazelbrook sixth graders will be going to Outdoor School the week of April 18th  through 22nd.  Seahawks will be gone from the 20th through the 22nd. Please make sure your child prepares warm clothing, rain gear, and long pants. Check the flyers that have been sent home or contact us if you need more information.
